RIYADH – VFSTCPII Riyadh Chapter launched its first MERS-CoV Awareness Campaign on August 12, 2017 held at the Philippine Embassy Riyadh aiming to educate the public on the said disease due to the present increase of MERS-CoV cases in the Kingdom. The event was graced by Consul General Iric C. Arribas, Chargé d’affaires of the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh and was attended by 110 participants who are members of different Filipino Community Organizations in the Central and Eastern Regions.
Four health practitioners have been invited as speakers for the campaign. Dr. Henry Baffoe-Bonnie, MD, a Consultant in Infectious Diseases from the Ministry of National Guard Hospital presented an “Overview of MERS-CoV” which covered the definition & origin of the disease and current statistics of areas affected. Ms. Ma. Ana Flor C. Pascua, DNP, MN, RN, a Quality Healthcare Management Specialist from King Saud University Medical City lectured on “Health Guidelines” expounding on symptoms, transmission, ways of protection against MERS-CoV, handling infection, and travel measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Ms. Marissa N. Alarcon, RN, ICP, and Infection Control Practitioner from the Ministry of National Guard Hospital discussed about “Preventing Transmission in Community Setting” emphasizing on good personal hygiene and steps to control spread of disease in case of infection. Ms. Maria Italy D. Carlos, RN, RM, CI, a Cardio Thoracic Nurse – King Saud University Hospital and Simulation Clinical Instructor – KAAUH / PNU focused on “Cough and Sneeze Etiquette & Handwashing Steps” highlighting the importance of hand washing in the prevention of disease. Attendees participated in the Question & Answer portion of the lectures and the lively actual demonstration of proper hand washing steps and use of hand disinfectant solution in the absence of washing facilities.
Lastly, Col. Gilbert G. Alarcon, Director of VFSTCPII-Riyadh gave a short talk to inspire the attendees to give importance to having not just good physical health but also good spiritual health.
